You have that new Rc car tire and rim.

You are wondering how to get them glued to the rims correctly? I know you are anxious to get this done, so you can go try out the new tires.

It is important to take your time gluing up your new set of tires.

Taking your time and doing it right will payoff in the long run.

First off let us look at the equipment you are going to need for gluing a Rc car tire:

1. CA tire glue and Bands

2. Hobby knife

3. Scissors

4. Lint free towel

5. Cleaning solution - can use denatured alcohol, motor spray or a de-greaser.

6. Scotch-Brite pad or a fine grit sand paper

Let us start off with prepping the rims. Do not over look doing this.

This will help guarantee that your rc car tire or rc truck tire stays glued to the rim.

Using the Scotch-Brite pad or fine grit sand paper scuff up the channel on the rim where the bead of the tire adheres to the rim.

=================================================================

If you are using Chrome Rims. You are going to have to remove all the chrome plating from the area where the tire mounts to the rim.

If you do not do this the glue will not stick to the chrome plating.

To accomplish this there are a couple of ways to do it.

You can use the Scotch-Brite pad, fine grit sand paper or a Dremel Tool with a wire brush.

The Dremel and wire brush is what I use.

All you need to do is remove all the chrome plating from the area where your tires are going to mount. Taking care not to damage the face of the rim in any way.

Take your time, you do not want to mess up those pretty rims.

=================================================================

After you have scuffed up your rims or removed the chrome, use your hobby knife to remove any burs or mold seams in that area where the tires are going to seat.

Now you need to clean the rims with your cleaning solution. Using the lint free towel.

In the manufacturing process the rims are coated with a mold-release agent.

This agent is used so the rims will release from the mold.

After cleaning let the rims dry thoroughly.

Depending on the compound of the tire, I use the Scotch-Brite pad or the hobby knife to clean up the bead of the tire.

Removing any burs or mold seams on the bead.

Again, you are going to need to remove the mold-release agent from the tire bead. I use a different lent free towel on the tire.

If you fail to clean both the RC car tire and rim your CA glue will not stick properly.

Again let the your tires dry thoroughly.

rc tire gluing picture Next order of business is prepping the foam inserts for your Rc Car tire or Rc truck tire.

If you are using Molded Foam Inserts you can skip over this process.

Molded foam inserts are very good at holding their shape.

First you are going need to check and see if your foam inserts are holding their shape.

Many times from the packaging process the foams are going to all out of shape.

You do have a few options if the foams are all out of shape. Since the performance of your tires depends on the foam inserts it is important to get the foams back in shape.

This is going take a little time to get them back in shape.

Since the inserts are made of foam rubber I soak mine in water for a few moments.

Then ring out as much water as possible and then let them dry out thoroughly.

I use water when the foams seem to have been packaged for a very long time.

If the foam inserts look like they are going to regain their shape on their own, I just set them out in the air for a few hours and let them do there thing.

With the foams exposed to air they will regain their shape given time.

A side note, if I am using tires with non-molded foam inserts.

I will let the foams sit out for a few days so they will regain their natural state.

But, if I am in a hurry I use water to speed up this process some.

So, now your foam inserts are all back in shape. Now you need to trim your inserts to the same angle as the sidewall of your tires.

Using your scissors trim the outside edge of the foams at about a 45-degree angle. This angle depends on the shape of the side wall of your tires.

Take extra care in keeping the scissors at the same angle all the way around the insert.

Now, turn the foam inside out and trim the inside of your inserts the same way.

After you trimmed the inside turn them right side out.

rc tire gluing picture Finally, you are ready to install the inserts in your rc car tire or rc truck tire.

Make sure they are centered in the tire.

Slide them from side to side and around the tire. You do not want them to bunch up any and you want them centered in the tire.

Using denatured alcohol I again clean the bead of the tire. Denatured alcohol evaporates quickly, so they will dry quickly.

rc tire gluing picture Now you are ready to mount Rc car tire on the rim.

Will almost, if you are using a directional Rc car tire or Rc truck tire check to make sure that you are mounting your tires in the correct direction.

While pulling up on the edges of the tire slowly push the rim into the tire.

Take your time, you do not want to bunch up the foam insert any. Keep working the rim into the tire till the beads line up with the channels on the rim.

Keep working with the tire till the beads line up properly.

With the beads lined up check to see if there is any lumps or bumps in the tire.

If there are any you will need to trim the foams in that area to remove the lumps or bumps.

You want the tire to have a uniform smooth look to it.

rc tire gluing picture Ready for glue, not quite.

You need to double check for any lumps or bumps on the tire, if so fix it now before it is too late.

Also, are you using directional tires, if so are two mounted for left-side tires and two mounted for right-side tires.

Do not make the mistake I have made and mounted and glued four left-side and no right-side. My rc car looked kind of dumb that way.

Had to buy four more tires and rims, costly mistake. So do double check, CA glue is permanent.

So, you have double checked everything, now it is time to glue up those tires.

We are almost there, do not get in a hurry.

Start by picking up one Rc car tire or Rc truck tire, using your thumb, pull back on the tire a little exposing the channel in the rim and the bead.

Apply a SMALL amount of glue to the bead. No need for a gob, just a small drop.

Now work your way around the tire in small sections. After you have worked your way all around the tire place the band on the tire over the bead and channel in the rim.

Now place the tire down to dry.

Glued side up, you do not want to glue tire and rim to work surface.

Now go to you next tire and rim and repeat the same process.

I always glue the same side on all tires.

So, I know where I am at in the gluing process.

One side glued, great, let them dry, then glue the other side.

rc tire gluing picture Hopefully you have not glued your fingers together or your hand to your work surface.

If you have some glue on your fingers, hands or work surface acetone or finger nail polish remover will get most of it off.

Acetone or nail polish remover will also cleanup any excess you have on your Rc car tire or Rc truck tire and rims.

Just be extra careful with chrome rims, acetone or nail polish remover will tarnish your chrome.
