All 1/8th scale nitro rc buggies are 4wd featuring a three differential type of drive train. They use a front, rear and center differential to transfer power to each end.
This is one of the major tuning aspects of a 1/8th scale nitro rc buggy. Change the oil weight in the differentials and you can radically change how your buggy corners and handles jumps. Plus, how it performs on different types of surfaces (bumpy, loose, hard or smooth).
One of the big variables in choosing a 1/8th scale nitro rc buggy is the power plant. The nitro engine used in these buggies can and does vary greatly. Depending on the manufacture the engine size can vary from a .15 cubic inch up to a .28 cubic inch. The .18 to .21 cubic inch engines being the most popular with many manufacturers.
This is one area that many get confused, having a big engine does not always mean more speed. In most all cases the nitro rc buggies with the small engine will be just as fast as the ones using a large engine.
The big difference will be acceleration. This is where the large engine is going to shine, but not always win. Depending on the surface the smaller engine can easily out perform the larger engine. It will be able to get its power to "hookup" faster.
Another big variable in choosing a 1/8th scale nitro rc buggy that is right for you, is how it is packaged. In this area there are many different options:
1. The buggy is in kit form, where engine and electronics may or may not be included. You will need to complete assembly of your new nitro rc buggy, plus supply your own engine and electronics if they are not included.
2. ARR (Almost Ready to Run) or Pro, this is when the buggy will come pre-assembled with no engine or electronics. This also depends on the manufacturer, servos could be included in the package, but many times they are not.
3. RTR (Ready to Run/Race), you new nitro rc buggy will come complete assembled with engine, servos and in many cases radio.
The other big area that all 1/8th scale nitro rc buggies have in common is their suspension. The suspension on a 1/8th scale buggy can be very complicated and sophisticated.
Tuning your suspension to handle different kinds and types of surfaces is a big part of owning a 1/8th scale nitro rc buggy. In the list below are some of the different things that can be changed and adjusted to help with the performance of your buggy.
1. Camber 2. Caster 3. Toe-in / Toe-out 4. Shock Angle 5. Spring rate or Weight 6. Shock Dampering 7. Ride Height 8. Droop 9. Roll Center 10. Sway 11. Ackerman 12. Kick-up 13. Track 14. Wheelbase 15. Offset
Depending on what kind of buggy you buy, be it a kit or ARR or Pro or RTR the manufacturer will include an initial setup already installed or an initial setup sheet. By doing this you will have a starting point, then make adjustments to suit your driving style.
