Just because the Cliff Climber is small in size, doesn't mean it doesn't have a big crawler attitude!!
With the Cliff Climber only being 1/14th scale many thought it was not going to be a very capable rc rock crawler. Will DuraTrax™ surprised everyone, it is one tough go any where rock crawler.
In some cases the small size of the Cliff Climber is an advantage, the big being if you are limited on space. What gives this crawler it's big truck attitude is that it is a "Clod-style" crawler.
With the motors mounted on each axle eliminates the need for a center transmission and drive shafts. It also eliminates the dreaded torque twist that many 2.2 crawlers experience with a center mounted motor and transmission.
This rock crawler may have a little tendency to "Clod Stall". This is when the steeper the climb gets more weight is transferred to the rear axle causing the rear axle to stall.
This can be easily over come with each axle being driven by a 380 motor and drawing 14 plus volts from the ESC, a little more throttle input will get the rear axle driving.

The ESC that Duratrax™ for this crawler is its one feature that makes it unique. The Duratrax™ designed a single ESC, dual battery setup.
The motors are wired in parallel so both are drawing the same amount of volts at all times. This ESC is powerful, designed to handle 14.4 to 16.8 volts run dual motors and draw power from dual batteries.
To maximize traction the Cliff Climber gets its full time 4WD from the use of a solid spool gearbox on each axle. Plus, the final gear ratio of 29.66:1 are a couple of the things that give it its great climbing ability.
Then add a feature that is usually found only on Super Class crawlers is 4 wheel steering. The stock steering servos do a good job if the terrain is relative tame, but as the terrain gets tougher they do lack in torque. So an upgrade that you may need to consider is replacing the stock servos with higher torque servos.
Even with the battery packs mounted up top this crawler does have a very low center of gravity. If you need to lower the center of gravity a little more all you will need to do is mount the battery packs over the front and rear steering servos.
The Cliff Climber does not have a lot of ground clearance, so this could cause you to get hung up a lot or alter your lines when climbing. This problem can be corrected with larger tires.
With DuraTrax™ using 12mm hex adapters on this crawler many after market wheels and tires are available to improve ground clearance.
Do not let the small size (1/14th scale) of the Cliff Climber deter you from considering this little rock climber.
Right out of the box it is a very capable climber and with a few upgrades it could be a very good rock climber.
So, if you are limited on space for crawling or looking for something just a little different from all the other rock crawlers on the market the Cliff Climber could be the Rock Crawler for you!!
