Are you needing to know what RC Tools you need for working on or repairing your RC Vehicles?
Good ideas for equipping your RC Tool Box.
It does not matter if you have an electric or nitro RC vehicle your RC Tools are an important investment. With our rc vehicles being a large investment, I feel that our RC Tools we choose need to be good quality.
With choosing RC Tools of good quality is going to make them a large investment also. But, with your rc tool box equipped with good rc tools will make working on them much more pleasurable.
So let us take a close look at what rc tools are going to be needed.
First off you are going to need to know if your Rc vehicle is "Metric" or "Standard" threaded.
A very large majority of all rc vehicles are metric threaded and a very small minority are standard threaded.
You will have to determine just which of these tread types you have. I will give an over view in both metric and standard as to inform you on what sizes are needed.
This is going to be a general explanation of what maybe or is needed. This will not get into the details of each and every make and manufacturer.
There could easily be a rc tool that is specific to your rc vehicle. If so most times the manufacturer does include any specialty tools with your rc vehicle, plus they also include a very basic set of rc tools with your vehicle.
These rc tools can and do work just fine, but it will make your RC experience more enjoyable with a higher quality set of tools.
This description of the needed rc tools can also vary as to what scale you are running. This outline of rc tools will work on 1/18th scale to 1/8th scale rc vehicles.
If you have minis, micros or large 1/5th scale you could easily require different size RC Tools. Keep that in mind when selecting your rc tools. Your manual will inform you as to what size nuts and screws your rc vehicle has.
First off let us look at the Hex and or Ball Driver.
Both of these driveres are used on "Hex" headed screws and bolts. The difference being is the tip of the driver. The Hex driver has a flat tip, than needs to placed straight on to the screw or bolt.
While the Ball driver can be placed on the screw or bolt at an angle. I have both a Hex driver set and a Ball driver set in my RC Tool Box, but it is not needed.
If I was going to choose one over the other I would pick a Ball driver set. They will give you the ability to get at those hard to reach screws and bolts.
But I do use both on a very regular basis. The Hex driver on the easy to reach screws and bolts. This type of driver feels more direct and firm to me, little or no chance of slipping off. The flat faced hex driver just seems to grip the screw and bolt better. This is just a personal preference. Both types work very well.
You can find these drivers in sets of 4, 5 or 6 drivers to a set. This just depends on the manufacture and how they want to package their set. You do have the option of buying them as a set or individually. Just pick what works best for you.
The Metric Sizes you will most likely need are: 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0mm. These four sizes are the most common in the 4 piece set. The 5 and 6 piece sets will ussually add 3.5, 4 or 5 mm, just depends on how they are packaged. The 1.5 to 3.0mm will be the four sizes you are going to be using the most often.
The Standard Sizes are going to be 0.50", 1/16", 5/64", 3/32" and 7/64". If the set you are looking at is a six pice set it could have either a smaller or larger driver included, just again depends on the packaging. The most common standard sizes are from 0.50" to 3/32". Just double check your manual to see what sizes you do need.
This now brings us to the "Nut Driver". There is not much to say about this type of driver, just that it is a much used RC Tool and that it is a much needed rc tool in your tool box.
A nut drivers like hex and ball drivers are sold in multi-piece sets and individually. So, again you have the option of how you want to add them to your rc tool box.
Just remember that it will pay off in the long run to purchase good quality nut drivers.
Once more, a driver comes in sets of 4 to 6 pieces, just depending on how the manufacturer packages them.
The Metric Sizes most commonly used are 4mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, and 7mm. Some sets will include 3.5mm, 4.5mm, or 8mm again this just depends on how they are packaged.
The Standard Sizes most often used are 3/16", 11/32", 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8". Again depending on the number of pieces in the set and how they are packaged determeds what sizes all included.
Again read your manual to decide what sizes are best for you.
The next RC Tools to consider are screw drivers, both Phillips and Flat headed.
Plus, some rc vehicles are using "Star Headed" screws, again check your owners manual to see if this type of driver needs to be included.
It is going to be advisable that you choose screw drivers that have harden tips on them. They are a little more costly, but in the long run will not damage screw heads or loose their shape.
In my rc tool box, I have included a set of four each in different sizes. Again, this depends on you choice and what you feel will work the best for you.
This brings us to some often overlooked rc tools that I feel all tool boxes need. These being a very good set of side cutters, short and long nose and bent nose pliers.
Again this is an area that you should spend a little extra cash for the best ones you can find. You are going to be using them often or wishing they were in your rc tool box when you need them.
Just to highlight some of the things I use all of mine for. Side cutter's for cutting parts off a parts tree, modifying tires and many other things.
The short, long and bent nose pliers are great getting into those hard to reach places that your fingers will not fit in. These three types of pliers are one of the most used rc tools in my box. So, shop around a little and find the best ones for you.
There are many more rc tools to consider while you are equipping your rc tool box.
